SMD LED Display Technology

The most commonly used method for manufacturing LED displays, in which LED chips are mounted on the circuit board in surface-mount packages.

What Is an SMD LED?

SMD (Surface Mounted Device) is a manufacturing method in which red, green, and blue LED chips are packaged within a single housing and soldered to the surface of a printed circuit board. Each package forms an independent pixel and is arranged in a regular pattern on the module.

This method is the most widely used packaging format in the LED display industry. The widespread availability of production lines and the ease of component procurement make SMD modules the most cost-effective option.

Structure of SMD Modules

An SMD package contains three color chips and bonding wires that connect them to the external terminals. The package is secured to the circuit board via solder. This structure simplifies production and repair: a faulty pixel can be replaced individually without having to replace the entire module.

This same structure also defines the technology’s limitations. Due to the space occupied by the housing and the solder area, the chips cannot be placed closer than a certain distance. Additionally, because the packages protrude from the surface, they are directly exposed to external factors.

Key Features of SMD Technology

Cost-effectiveness

Offers the most economical solution for the same surface area thanks to widespread production infrastructure.

Wide product range

Offers a wide range of pixel pitch options, from indoor to outdoor applications and from fine to wide pitches.

Ease of Repair

Individual module replacement is possible. There is no need to replace the entire module for a single faulty pixel.

High brightness

SMD modules designed for outdoor use can achieve brightness levels of 5,000 nits or higher.

Spare Part Availability

Thanks to standardized package dimensions, the long-term supply of replacement modules and components is not an issue.

Flexible installation

Can be used in a wide range of installation configurations, including flat, curved, and corner-joined setups.

Limitations. The protection rating of SMD modules for indoor applications typically ranges from IP20 to IP30. In areas where there is a risk of contact, resin-encapsulated GOB modules are more suitable, while COB modules provide better results at very close viewing distances.

Applications

  • Outdoor facade and building cladding applications
  • Fixed screens in conference and event halls
  • In-store and shopping mall corridor information displays
  • Sports facility scoreboards and perimeter display screens
  • High-ceilinged production and logistics areas

How pixel pitch is determined based on viewing distance is explained in detail on the pixel pitch page.

SMD Package Types

SMD packages are designated by standard codes based on their external dimensions. The code represents the package’s width and height in millimeters; for example, “SMD2020” denotes a 2.0 × 2.0-millimeter package. As the package size decreases, a finer pixel pitch becomes possible, but heat dissipation and brightness limits also change.

SMD1515P1.8 – P2.5Conference room and lobby displays
SMD2020P2.5 – P4Conference halls, in-store displays

Indoor and Outdoor SMD Modules

Although the same packaging method is used, indoor and outdoor modules are manufactured to meet different requirements. The difference lies not only in brightness but also in cabinet construction and protection rating.

Brightness800–1,500 nits5,000 nits and above
Protection ratingIP20 – IP30Front: IP65, Rear: IP54

CoolingNatural airflowFan-assisted or conduction
Additional measuresNot requiredLightning protection, power redundancy

Common mistake: Using indoor modules in semi-open areas leads to malfunctions during the initial humid period. Areas that are covered on top but open on the sides are considered outdoor environments, and an appropriate enclosure must be selected.

Three-in-One and DIP Structures

In today’s SMD packages, red, green, and blue chips are housed within a single enclosure; this structure is called “three-in-one” and ensures more accurate color transitions.

DIP, on the other hand, is an older method in which the chips are mounted separately and protrude outward. While it offers high brightness and durability, the pixel pitch remains wide; as a result, it is encountered today only in large-scale outdoor applications viewed from a distance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common technical questions about SMD LED Display Technology, answered briefly.

Ask our engineers
SMD modules manufactured for indoor use typically have a protection rating ranging from IP20 to IP30. In outdoor enclosures, the front panel can be certified up to IP65.
Yes. Since SMD packages are soldered individually to the circuit board, a defective pixel can be replaced without having to replace the entire module.
In common SMD modules, the pixel pitch ranges from P1.5 up to P10 and beyond for outdoor applications.
The code indicates the external dimensions of the LED package in millimeters. SMD2020 refers to a package measuring 2.0 × 2.0 millimeters and is typically used for pixel pitches ranging from P2.5 to P4.
It should not be used. Areas that are covered on top but open on the sides are considered outdoor environments; moisture and dust ingress will cause indoor modules to fail quickly.
In three-in-one packages, red, green, and blue chips are housed in a single enclosure, resulting in more accurate color transitions. In DIP configurations, the chips are mounted separately and protrude outward; because the pixel pitch remains wide, they are used only in large screens intended for viewing from a distance.
