Why Is Monitoring Critical in Infrastructure Facilities?
Operations at electric power distribution companies, water utilities, and manufacturing facilities rely on the continuous monitoring of data from SCADA systems. Detecting an abnormal value can be a matter of seconds, not minutes. Video walls in these facilities are not merely decorative elements—they are essential operational components; a failure results in a loss of visibility.
How Is SCADA Data Displayed on the Video Wall?
The data monitored in the control room is not uniform: the power grid single-line diagram, trend graphs, alarm lists, field camera footage, and sometimes geographic maps are all monitored simultaneously. Some of this data comes from the SCADA workstation’s video output, while other parts come from a separate reporting server. In practice, each source to be displayed on the video wall must be planned as a separate input; projects that begin with the idea of “let’s just enlarge the SCADA screen” are generally redesigned from scratch once the number of sources becomes clear.
Video Wall Where OT and IT Networks Are Separated
In critical infrastructure, the operational technology (OT) network is separate from the office network, and this separation is a security requirement. When the video wall controller is expected to display data from both sides, it sits right on this boundary. The solution typically involves placing the controller on the OT side and receiving content from the office side unidirectionally, or physically feeding two separate source groups through distinct inputs. This decision is not an AV decision but an architectural decision that must be made in conjunction with the organization’s cybersecurity policy and must be clarified at the very beginning of the project.
Alarm Prioritization and Visual Alerts
Under normal conditions, the wall displays the overall status; when an alarm is triggered, the relevant data can be automatically enlarged and highlighted. The key design question here is operational, not technical: which alarm level is significant enough to warrant changing the wall’s layout? If the screen layout is disrupted by every alert, operators will eventually start ignoring the alerts. Therefore, the prioritization threshold is determined in collaboration with operators who are familiar with the site.
Centralized Monitoring in Geographically Distributed Facilities
In operations spanning multiple locations—such as power plants, substations, or pump stations—data from all sites can be aggregated into a single central location. Here, the determining factor is not the screen but the line capacity: the bandwidth and latency of the camera feed from a remote site determine whether central monitoring is truly “real-time.” Measuring the existing line infrastructure before the project begins prevents complaints about latency later on.
Shift Handoffs and Operator Ergonomics
These rooms are staffed around the clock, and operators spend hours staring at the same wall. Screen height, pixel pitch selected based on viewing distance, and the room’s lighting level are just as critical as the panel specifications. Resetting the screen layout to the standard view during shift change is also a need often realized only later in many projects; continuing with the layout left by the previous shift creates confusion.
